Book Summary:
"A stolen book. A deadly plan. A destiny discovered.
If high school is all about social status, Indigo Blackwood has it made. Sure, her quirky mom owns an occult shop, and a nerd just won’t stop trying to be her friend, but Indie is a popular cheerleader with a football-star boyfriend and a social circle powerful enough to ruin everyone at school. Who wouldn’t want to be her?
Then a guy dies right before her eyes. And the dusty old family Bible her mom is freakishly possessive of is stolen. But it’s when a frustratingly sexy stranger named Bishop enters Indie’s world that she learns her destiny involves a lot more than pom-poms and parties. If she doesn’t get the Bible back, every witch on the planet will die. And that’s seriously bad news for Indie, because according to Bishop, she’s a witch too.
Suddenly forced into a centuries-old war between witches and sorcerers, Indie’s about to uncover the many dark truths about her life—and a future unlike any she ever imagined on top of the cheer pyramid."

I was really lucky to be able to get an ARC of this book free of charge at New York Comic Con 2013 and I really enjoyed it! Hexed is a modern day paranormal YA book about witches and magic. I love books about witches and sorcery and Michelle Krys did not disappoint with Hexed. The voice of this book was the voice of a realistic teenage girl; very witty and sarcastic, and it had me laughing many times throughout the story. The plot was very fast-paced, without feeling rushed, and it evolved with each new chapter. Hexed is a fun and exciting story filled with adventure, but there are also parts that are very dark and sad.

The characters in Hexed were very well written. The main character Indigo, or Indie as her friends call her, is a cheerleader in high school who is witty and somewhat shallow. She is very concerned with keeping her popularity status in school, which causes her to avoid anything that might jeopardize that, including talking about her mother, who owns an occult shop called The Black Cat, and her nerdy neighbor, a former friend named Paige. Indie’s only other concerns are her friendship with her best friend Bianca, which she refuses to believe has been slowly falling apart, and keeping her relationship with her popular boyfriend Devon, who she has absolutely nothing in common with. Then one day she meets a mysterious guy in leather named Bishop and her life changes forever as she soon finds out that she is a witch and could be in some possibly life threatening danger all because some sorcerers are looking for a Bible that contains the secret to killing every witch on the planet which is being protected by her mother.

The character development for Indie was great throughout the story. While Indie struggles to learn magic in time to defeat the sorcerers, internally struggles with her inner demons, and has to deal with a life altering tragedy that leaves your heart breaking for her, Indie slowly grows from being a self-conscious yet shallow teen to being a strong, less shallow witch as she learns to harness her powers. It was kind of hard for me to like Indigo at first, but as she began to find her own voice and grew to be her own person, without following the school status quo, it was hard not to root for her! The secondary characters were great as well! Paige is nerdy but she knows exactly who she is and is very comfortable in her own skin. She is a really good friend to Indie because she is always there for Indie even though Indie wasn't always there for her. Bishop is very secretive and mysterious at first, but as he opens up we see that he is very charming, even with his cocky attitude and snarky comments. The chemistry between Indigo and Bishop is undeniably strong and the banter between them is very funny to read.

Hexed has a very powerful ending that leaves you wanting more! I gave this story 4/5 stars and I really recommend this book for anyone who enjoys reading YA, especially paranormal, witchy YA. I can’t wait to read the next book in this series to know what happens to Indie, Bishop, and Paige next! Pick up a copy of Hexed when it gets released tomorrow, June 10th!
